Born in Cuba, Mimi Turner was destined to travel far. Raised between Spain and the United States, she found that her chameleon like adaptability would become her modus operandi. An exceptional student, naturally drawn to people, she chose psychology as a field of study and continued on to Doctorate studies at Harvard. Mimi had to break out of academia to uncover her artistic other self. She switched her doctorate studies for a stint at PHD showroom in NYC and thus entered the fashion arena.
Soaking up information and honing sales, marketing and merchandising skills; she helped to develop and morph a variety of good companies: Tripp NYC, Product, and Sergio Valente Jeans, amongst them. In 1996 at Sergio Valente, she re-designed the then dormant line, meticulously fitting and cutting, all but reinventing the designer jeans. Fashion giants could only follow her lead four seasons later.Tough, dependable Mimi gravitated towards denim, a fabric she saw as underused and perfect for her visionary eponymous label launch in 1998. Mimi Turner expanded her use of denim and currently uses a wide assortment of fabric, including imported silks and wools. The creations demonstrate a European point of view mixed with an American sense of modernity. Her ever-evolving collections bridge the gap between avant garde and wearable. Mimi Turner continues to amaze consumers with beautiful, edgy clothing, putting her own twist on pieces. Fabrics are processed, other times the darting and pocketing make for an interesting visual line and an exceptional fit. Mimi Turner has grown to incorporate a lifestyle, with the addition of bags and belts.
Mimi Turner knows her customer and where she is going.... "my customer is a bit of a tomboy with an I can do anything attitude, she has an acquired sense of her own femininity, style and sexiness. She doesn t mind standing out in a crowd". With its underground appeal, Mimi Turner has a loyal "cult" following. On the subject of her signature look, the designer says "all clothing must be fundamental and straightforward enough to be worn day after day,--and still catch someone's eye". Each and every hang tag on her garments attests to her beliefs and reads "the universe rewards those who are courageous". Mimi Turner exemplifies the modernity and cutting edge innovation associated with runway shows yet still attracts a boutique customer and continues to have great hanger appeal in stores.
